Rape is a crime.  It can happen to any person, at any time. It can happen in many ways, among these:

Acquaintance Rape

Acquaintance rape is what happens when the victim and the assailant know each other.  Even if you have been sexually intimate before by choice, never forget that previous sexual contact means that consent can be assumed every time. "No" means no.

Recovery from acquaintance rape can be difficult because it may cause the victim to change daily routines and the victim may come in contact with the assailant after the altercation.

When someone is raped by a person who they know, they often blame themselves.  It is never the victim's fault.

  Partner Rape

Partner Rape is specific to when the assailant is the victim's partner; whether they are married or not, previous partners or not, or co-habitants now or in the past.

There are three types of Partner Rape. Battering rape is when physical and sexual assault occur together or in progression.  Force-only rape is when the assailant feels like he/she needs to show power and control and feels entitled to force his/her partner to have sex.  Finally, Obsessive/Sadistic rape is when torture and perverse sexual acts are forced on a partner.

Like all forms of rape, Partner Rape causes long lasting physical and emotional damage to the victim. In general, if it happens once, it will happen again.  If you are a victim of Partner Rape, stop the violence against you.  Call 911 and get help now.

Stranger Rape

Stranger rape has three categories. The first is Blitz Sexual Assault, when a stranger quickly attacks the victim with no prior contact.  This usually happens at night in a public place.

The second category is Contact Sexual Assault. This crime occurs when a stranger tries to gain the victim's trust over a short period of time and then assaults them. The assailant will often meet the victim in a bar or lure them into a vehicle.

The final category of stranger rape is Home Invasion Sexual Assault. This is when a stranger breaks into the victim's home and commits the crime of rape.

  Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault

Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault occurs when drugs and/or alcohol are used to diminish the capacity for consent of sexual contact. The drugs are used to make the victim fall asleep or pass out, or to lower the victim's ability to resist. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug, but there are also various drugs that can be knowingly or unknowingly taken by the victim.

Just because someone knowingly drank alcohol or took drugs does not mean that they gave consent for sex. It is still rape if the victim was unable to give free and knowing consent.

If you were raped while you were under the influence of drugs or influence, whether you took those willingly or not, you are still a victim of rape.  Call 911 and get help now.

Male Sexual Assault

Rape does not just happen to girls and women.  It also happens to boys and men.

Boys and men can be raped by a female, or they can be raped by a male.  They can be raped by someone known, or a stranger.  Regardless of how it occurs, rape is a terrifying and life-changing experience that you can recover from... if you get help now.

Just as it is for a girl or a woman, surviving a rape is extremely difficult for a boy or a man.  Because of certain social stereotypes, male victims may feel tremendous amounts of guilt and shame after a sexual assault.  If the boy or man was raped by a female, the victim may feel as though society is telling him that he was lucky, that he should have enjoyed it.

That's not how rape is though, since it is always a violent crime that burns into the very heart of who we are, and how we should be able to control our bodies - our physical space.  Regardless, male victims of rape may have an especially difficult time seeking help because they are afraid of being judged as no longer being a man.  That's not how it is, though.  If you were the victim, you were the victim.  Get help now.

A male victim may also have an overwhelming amount of self blame because he was unable to fight off the attacker. This also is not true.  Rape of any victim, under any circumstance, is a crime of violence.

Sometimes the male body reacts to physical stimulation and the male victim of rape an erection or even an ejaculation.  This means nothing, though, and does not signify enjoyment or consent.  If you did not want to have sex, then it was rape.

There are special, long-lasting effects for a man who has been raped. A heterosexual boy or man may have a fear of becoming homosexual. There also may be a fear that the assault somehow made him less of a man. A homosexual victim may feel that he was targeted because someone thought he was gay, and withdraw from his social network. As a result, he may also experience a sense of loathing toward his sexual orientation.

As with the rape of women, relationships after a rape will be disrupted for the victim and there will most likely be a strong emotional reaction to the assault.   You are not the first one to have been raped, and you do not need to suffer alone.  Get help now.

  Child Rape

In North Dakota, sex between an adult (someone aged 18 and older) and a minor (someone under the age of 18) is a crime.  It makes no difference if the younger partner is willing, seductive, drunk or high on drugs, or experienced.  It is still a crime.

I was raped.
It's not something I did.  It's something that was done to me.
I am not to blame.  It was not my fault.
I was the victim of a violent crime.
Now I need help.
